Isabel Skypala:has been honoured with prestigious award 27 October 2014

Dr Isabel Skypala, clinical lead for food allergy at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, has been honoured with the prestigious William Frankland award from the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) for her outstanding service in the field of clinical allergy.

She is the first non-medical recipient of this award.

Dr William Frankland, an allergist who previously served as a registrar to Alexander Fleming in the development of penicillin, presented the award to Dr Skypala at the BSACI annual meeting.

Dr Skypala comments: “I am delighted to receive this award and it was a huge honour that Dr Frankland himself was there to present it.

"Food allergy can have a huge impact on a patient's quality of life. The work that we are doing in the clinics at Royal Brompton means that patients can be seen quickly and have access to a wide range of tests to ensure they are not needlessly avoiding foods, or consuming potentially dangerous foods.”

Dr Skypala is a consultant allergy dietitian and clinical lead for food allergy at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. She set up an award-winning dedicated adult food allergy clinic in 2007 at Royal Brompton, in order to create a one-stop shop for food allergy diagnosis, with a gold standard oral food challenge that is undertaken by all those for whom allergy history and tests are inconclusive. The clinics were the first of their kind in the UK.

She has achieved recognition amongst the clinical allergy community as a national authority on the diagnosis and management of adult food allergy. She is also honorary teaching fellow at Imperial College and honorary research dietitian at Guy’s hospital.
